Amos Lee released his third LP yesterday and doesn’t disappoint. Last Days at the Lodge does a great job of comprehensively displaying how skillful Amos Lee really is. When I first saw that he was scheduled to release another album right at the start of summer time I was a little disappointed because Amos is one of my go-to-musicians in the months of gloomier weather. Selfishly, I was hoping that his album would come out sometime around October when the clouds begin to take over the Seattle skyline and the early morning bus rides capture my thoughts with consistent drops of rain on the windows. It’s in those times that Amos’ previous work has woven itself into my ever growing musical rotation. But this new album comes with a different kind of Amos energy, an energy more akin to his live show.
What I like most about this album is that it maintains his smooth vocals and charming tone, of which are Lee’s greatest qualities, but he begins to show a more well-rounded musical repetoire. There is some funk, some r&b and even a taste of classic rock; what is most significant though is his dedication to what got him to where he is. That smooth soulful acoustic vibe that can’t help but make you feel comfortable still remains. This album has incredible versatility. The earlier songs on the album are perfect for a warm summer day, and the latter songs are more intentional; finding it’s successes in meeting the listener exactly where they are at. I am really excited for this album to continue to grow on me. Amos Lee’s growing catalog is something that continues to develop, mature and unveil new boundaries that further excite me as a listener, but never loses sight of his soft voice and lyrical brilliance.
My early favorite off of Last Days at the Lodge is the 5th track “What’s Been Going On”. It has a really catchy piano undertone and a great ebb and flow between faster and slower paces. Definitely check it out
